Hermosillo, the capital of neighboring Sonora, set an alarming temperature record on Thursday.

Federal authorities said that a weather station in the city hit 43 degrees centigrade, or roughly 109 degrees Fahrenheit.

That ties the previous record for hottest recorded day in April, set on April 25, 2020, more than two weeks later on the calendar. Before that, 2017 held the April heat record. Gilberto Lagarda, a weather specialist with the national water commission, said Thursday’s scorching temps were also the earliest such extremes have ever been seen in the city.

The most immediate cause was a high pressure system in the area, but Lagarda said records have been falling much more frequently over the last couple decades.

“A rise in temperatures is really being seen, along with extreme events in the region,” he said, adding that he links the trends to climate change.
