The Arizona Department of Transportation is warning residents to avoid fake sites where they may be scammed.

Unlike other states, Arizona does not have a “Department of Motor Vehicles.” Instead, it maintains the “Motor Vehicle Division,” or MVD. While a slight difference, ADOT warns residents that scammers operate phony websites.

"That can lead people to unauthorized sites that charge money to unsuspecting customers," said ADOT's Bill Lamoreaux. He advises residents to avoid these scams by going to the official site.

"The way to do it online is ‘azmvdnow.gov,'" Lamoreaux said. "You can also come into any one of our branches across the state. We happen to have 40 MVD locations. There’s also 160 authorized third-party locations."

Lamoreaux says ADOT doesn’t know how many fake sites are out there, but notes that the real site is free to users.
