Consumers in Maricopa and Pinal counties are paying an average of 10.9% more than a year ago, according to the Consumer Price Index.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the index, which measures price changes for food, shelter, medical visits and other daily living expenses.

For the Phoenix area, the biggest increases between February 2021 and February 2022 were in transportation — that includes used vehicles up 38.5%, and gas up 44%. Clothing prices jumped 15%, and groceries increased 10% with meats, poultry, fish and eggs up even more at 16%.

The index does not measure differences in price levels between cities in the metro area.

According to a BLS news release, the index for all items except food and energy increased 9.9% with used cars and trucks (38.5%), shelter (12.4%) and recreation (12.1%) contributing the most.
