Phoenix-based activism group Chicanos Por La Causa has launched a $10 million nonpartisan campaign to get more Latino people to vote in Arizona.

Joe Garcia with Chicanos Por La Causa says Latinos often don’t make up more than 15% of ballots cast in Arizona elections, despite comprising almost 32% of the state’s population.

“In the last midterm elections, among the total votes cast, Latinos amounted to about 14% of the ballots cast in Arizona, so we’re looking to up that to 16%, or more,” said Garcia.

Garcia says regardless of party affiliation, helping more Latino people vote will allow for more focus on Latino issues by state politicians.

“It’s nonpartisan, we don’t care if you vote Democrat, Republican or otherwise. We know that if Latino issues are discussed at the table, then Latino issues will be addressed,” said Garcia.

Garcia says he hopes this campaign will influence younger generations of Latino voters to cast their ballots more frequently, and that a campaign like this is extremely important in a time with strict voting laws coming from the Arizona Legislature.
