1st restriction-free Holy Week brings big crowds to Sonoran beaches
Sonora’s first Holy Week without pandemic restrictions brought huge crowds to the state’s famous beaches.
In San Carlos and nearby Guaymas, officials reported more than 90,000 visitors between Thursday and Sunday. Eric Fairfield, a full-time San Carlos resident and brewery co-owner, shared his thoughts on how it stacked up to pre-pandemic years.
“It looked exactly like the old ones. People were crazy, the only difference was you couldn't get your car out on the beach,” he said. “Other than that I didn't see any difference.”
The former Tucson resident mostly holed up in his home to avoid the noise and crowds, but he said his brewery Marvida — which opened months before the pandemic arrived in Sonora — had decent business.
“We basically ran out of a lot of beer,” he said, adding that now they’re re-stocked and ready for more typical crowds.
