Mexico’s president says he wants to work with other Latin American countries on lithium development.

Last month, Mexico’s Legislature approved a reform that nationalized the development of lithium resources in the country. Now, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he wants to seek help from other Latin American countries with experience mining the material, like Chile, Argentina and Bolivia, which has also nationalized lithium.

He’s spoken with each country’s president in the hopes of “creating an association to help each other out.”

Sonora is home to one of the world’s largest lithium deposits, and concessions for it are currently controlled by the Chinese company Ganfeng. López Obrador said his government is still exploring what to do about those concessions.
