Homicides with firearms rose by 35% nationally between 2019 and 2020, resulting in the highest rate in 25 years. Data from the CDC shows Arizona’s numbers rose as well.

79% of all homicides and 53% of suicides involved firearms nationally. The CDC’s website lists deaths from firearms increased by more than 1.5% in Arizona in the same period. 2020 marked the highest death rate from firearms since 2005.

While all demographic groups experienced increases, the report showed the highest rates were among non-Hispanic Black individuals. 

Director of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Dr. Debra Houry says reducing violence means focusing on inequities. 

“Programs, policies and practices can reduce risks of violence and inequities by focusing on the places and the people experiencing the greatest burden of violence," Houry said.
