Reporters in Mexico demonstrate for a silenced press in 2017 after a colleague was slain in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Mexican reporters are again mourning the killings of multiple colleagues in the span of just several days.

Late last week, the body of well-known journalist Luis Enrique Ramirez was found in the Sinaloan capital of Culiacan.

Then on Monday, reporters Yesenia Mollinedo and Johana Garcia were gunned down in the eastern state of Veracruz. Juan Vazquez, a spokesperson for the press freedom organization Article 19, learned about the latter two shortly before a march planned for Ramirez in Mexico City.

Compared to the massive international mobilization in the wake of a similar series of killings early this year, turnout was relatively small and there was a feeling of defeat in the air, according to Vazquez. He said it’s a hard thing to “face the complete indifference” of authorities, those with the responsibility and capacity to actually do something about the crisis of violence against journalists.

“Clearly, it seems protests aren’t enough,” he said.
