Mexico’s president recently visited several indigenous groups in neighboring Sonora, including one with a long history of difficulty accessing water.

Federal and state government officials have vowed to address the longstanding water issues in the Comcaac Nation along the Sea of Cortez. But in his visit to Desemboque on Sunday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged that doing so “isn’t easy.”

Water is becoming more scarce, the wells that are drilled often bring up salty water, and water infrastructure isn’t reliable, he said. He raised the prospect of drilling additional wells and even aqueducts to ensure supply to both Desemboque and Punta Chueca.
