The head of Mexico’s COVID-19 response said that a fifth wave “would not be surprising.”

There’s no indication yet that it’s begun, but Hugo Lopez-Gatell said that if and when it does come, the country is in a decent position to respond to it.

He pointed to high rates of vaccinations among adults, as well as a substantial reserve of 10.5 million vaccine doses as key factors working in the country's favor. But many children in Mexico have yet to be vaccinated.

Vaccinations for five to 11-year-olds should start before the end of the year, and the country is in negotiations with Pfizer for doses, according to Lopez-Gatell. Mexico is also working toward approval of the Cuban-made Abdala vaccine for use with children.
