Johns Hopkins University released data earlier this month showing that the U.S. has now lost more than 1 million people to the effects of COVID-19.

That number represents a cross-section of the population, particularly when it comes to race and ethnicity. But just how accurate are those specific breakdowns?

Recent reporting indicated medical examiners have been misidentifying Latino or Hispanic people as white nearly 3% of the time — and that didn’t begin with the pandemic.

Journalist Ana Arana has done investigative reporting on such misidentifications and their implications. The Show spoke with her to learn about her findings and their significance.
