The Sonoran capital Hermosillo is facing serious water problems, but the city may get some assistance.

This year, Hermosillo has already had trouble maintaining flows from the El Novillo reservoir, one of the city’s most important sources of water. Without good rainfall this monsoon, experts say the capital’s water situation could worsen even further.

On Monday, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was asked if federal resources would be made available to address the situation.

He responded by saying that the federal government will assist Sonoran Gov.  Alfonso Durazo with “whatever he needs.”

For his part, Durazo said on Tuesday that reducing water demand, improving water infrastructure and adding new water sources — like a desalination plant — are among the important steps to be taken.
