The governors of two neighboring northern Mexican states are working together on a major interstate project.

If completed as hoped, a four-lane highway would connect the state of Chihuahua to the Sonoran port city of Guaymas, substantially cutting the travel time.

The state’s governors, María Campos and Alfonso Durazo respectively, recently signed an agreement to cooperate on planning and seeking funding for the roughly 270-mile project, which is expected to cost some $660 million.

Durazo said that such a highway would make the port in Guaymas a viable option for exports from Chihuahua, as well as opening up tourist opportunities in nearby San Carlos.
