A Supreme Court ruling declared immigrants who fear persecution if sent back to their countries of origin have no right to a bond hearing after six months of detention.

A Homeland Security official ruled Antonio-Arteaga Martinez had credible fears of persecution or torture if sent back to Mexico and therefore entitled him to further review. 

While he applied for permission to stay in the country, his case on whether to remain won’t be heard until next year.

But the ruling written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor says the provision to look into a case like his does not require the government to hold a bond hearing. 

Another ruling from the court limits how immigrants can band together in court. Justice Samuel Alito wrote the opinion saying the court can only rule on the cases of immigrants before them, not as a class of similarly situated people.
