Arizona Republic journalists formed a union almost 3 years ago. Here's how it's going

Reports about struggles in the newspaper business have made headlines for more than a decade, with blame for that falling on the industry itself, internet advertising and political divisions — among many other things.

And numbers from the Pew Research Center show that newsroom employment has dropped by more than 25% since 2008.

In response to layoffs and limited pay and benefits, a number of Arizona Republic employees formed the Arizona Republic Guild — a union — to negotiate with its corporate parent Gannett.

To learn about what progress has been made and whether there could be dramatic action on the horizon, The Show spoke with longtime Republic journalist, Richard Ruelas.
