Mexico is still working to regain a top rating for aviation safety.

In May 2021, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration determined that the Mexican government does not meet the standards of a United Nations body and downgraded the country’s aviation safety rating, from Category 1 to 2. As a result, Mexican airlines can’t establish new routes to the U.S., though existing ones can continue operating.

Mexico’s transportation ministry announced last week that the FAA recently conducted its seventh review since the decision last year and that it hopes to recoup the top rating in coming months. Several outlets, including Reforma, reported that the country failed the latest review.

Asked about the review Friday, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said authorities are complying with all the requirements. But he also took the opportunity to cast aspersions on political opponents and international organizations, some of which aren’t honest, he said.
