It’s been nearly eight years since 43 students from a rural college went missing in southern Mexico. Now the country’s president says his government knows what happened to them.

During his morning press conference, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said there will be a resolution to the case of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa teachers college who disappeared in the state of Guerrero in 2014.

"We already know what happened," he said.

The official story presented by the previous administration has already been proven false by an independent team of researchers. And López Obrador has promised to investigate military operations that have been linked to the disappearances.

Now, he says the case will be resolved before the end of the year, adding that additional work needs to be done before the latest information can be released publicly.

Resolving this case is one of 100 key promises the president made at the time of his election in July 2018.
