Expectations for our own lives often lead to more questions than answers. Did I do the right thing? What do I do next? How am I feeling about my choices or where my life has ended up?

That would seem to be more than enough to occupy our minds and energy. But because we don’t just live by ourselves in our own heads, other individuals — or, sometimes, society at large — also create expectations.

For essayist Sari Botton, those expectations were related to having children and being a mom. She realized that wasn’t what she wanted for herself but wasn’t able to feel firm in those convictions until she reached her 40s.

Botton is the author of the new book, "And You May Find Yourself: Confessions of a Late-Blooming Gen-X Weirdo." The Show spoke with her about her work and journey to finding herself.
