The Navajo Nation is now seeing uncontrolled spread of COVID-19 in more than half of its communities. 

Health officials reported 65 communities now have uncontrolled spread, primarily of the virus’ latest omicron variant. Ba.5 has been identified as more transmissible but vaccines have prevented people from dying of the virus and lowered hospitalizations. 

Over a five-day period, officials reported 177 new cases but no deaths.

"Yes, people are getting sick but our hospital visits are still very low even with this new contagious variant," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez.

Vaccination rates on the Navajo Nation reflect the national average of about 70%. But among those 65 years or older, Nez said 90% are vaccinated.
