Mexican officials have reopened the case of the notorious 1994 assassination of a presidential candidate.

Sonora native Luis Donaldo Colosio was fatally shot while campaigning in Tijuana in late March of that year. Mario Aburto was arrested and later confessed to the crime, though questions about the assassination have swirled ever since, with many — including family members of Colosio and Sonora’s current governor — doubting that he acted alone.

Last year, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) called on Mexico’s Attorney General to reopen the case after determining that Aburto had suffered torture at the hands of federal security forces. The office did so late last week.

“We’ve been waiting for justice for 28 years,” said Laura Elena Dosolina Colosio Murrieta, one of Colosio’s sisters. Given that, she said she doesn’t put much faith in the recently announced investigation, but does hope that her family eventually gets some clarity.
