Tonto National Forest is updating its land management plan for the first time in decades.
The last time the forest had a new management plan was 1985.
Since then, it has become one of the most heavily used recreation areas in the country. It recently put a new version out for public comment, then found out that a technical issue may have made it difficult to give feedback.
The document focuses on wildfire, recreation, the use of volunteers and other aspects that might affect policy, said Kenna Belsky of Tonto Forest.
“There’s a whole update on the best available science. You know the way we did things in the '80s is very different from the way we need to be doing things moving forward, and the new plan definitely reflects those changes in science,” Belsky said.
