Security forces in neighboring Sonora are preparing for possible fallout from a recent high-profile arrest.

Longtime drug kingpin Rafael Caro Quintero was arrested in Sinaloa last week, but his criminal organization was very active in Sonora.

Asked how his state planned on responding to the arrest, Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo said that security efforts were being reinforced, especially in Caborca and other parts of the state where Quintero’s criminal organization was particularly active.

He acknowledged that such high-profile arrests can lead to violent responses, but said that in the medium-term the detention of people like Quintero could lead to a decrease in violence in Sonora, which has dealt with high rates for a number of years.
