A federal judge in San Francisco has ruled that the Biden administration must work to undo the harms caused by the Trump administration’s so-called "Muslim ban."

The Trump administration first enacted its Muslim ban at the beginning of 2017 and it blocked people from seven Muslim-majority counties from the entering the U.S. Portions of that ban and a series of others like it that year were shot down in court, but not before preventing tens of thousands of would-be visa holders from getting permission to come to the country.

This suit was filed in 2018 and now includes more than dozen plaintiffs whose visas were affected.

Though the Biden administration repealed all the bans, the suit argued the government had failed to address the lasting harms they caused. This week, U.S. District Court Judge James Donato ordered the government meet with the plaintiffs to discuss reconsidering visa applications for things like family reunification, jobs, educational opportunities and medical treatment.
