Taide Elena holds a portrait of her dead grandson, José Antonio Elena Rodríguez, in 2012.

Ten years ago, a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed through the border wall in Nogales, Sonora.

The shooter was a Border Patrol agent, and his death became a flashpoint in the debate about the border that would have ripple effects to this day.

That 16-year-old boy was named José Antonio Elena Rodríguez, and Rafael Carranza digs into his life and death — and what came after — in a new podcast for the Arizona Republic called Rediscovering: Killed Through the Border Fence.

Carranza is an immigration reporter for the Arizona Republic and the host of the podcast. The Show spoke with him to learn more about it and José Antonio.
