Fall is overseeding season in Arizona — when residents transform their lawns to a greener, winter turf. But with the Southwest battling a historic drought and water cuts, the City of Mesa is encouraging residents to limit or forgo their overseeding efforts this year. Mesa conservation coordinator Becky Zusy says the benefits go beyond just water savings.

“Not overseeding is a choice that helps you save time, save water, save money, save the air quality. There’s all sorts of motivation to consider not overseeding,” says Zusy.

Zusy says overseeding uses approximately 8,000 gallons of water for every 1,000 square feet of grass.

Information about water conservation efforts suggested can be found on the city of Mesa's website, social media and newsletters.
