Wildlife managers say 58 bison have been relocated from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park. 

The bison were transferred to the Intertribal Buffalo Council, which moved the animals to the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma and the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. 

Due to overpopulation, the national park is reducing the size of the Kaibab Plateau Herd to under 200 by 2025 to protect park resources such as vegetation, water and archaeological sites. 

Since 2018, park staff have removed 203 bison from the North Rim, and transferred 182 to 8 different American Indian Tribes.

That is from an agreement with the InterTribal Buffalo Council. 

The removal of bison started in 2014.
