The ASU Center for Violence Prevention and Community Safety studied suicide trends in the state for the second half of the last decade.

Elderly people were at the highest risk. 

People older than 75 had a rate of about 30.5 deaths by suicide per 100,000 people. 

Across all demographics, Yavapai and Mohave counties had the highest rates of suicide across the state. 

The center studied suicide rates between 2015 and 2020, during which there were 8,129 victims. Among the findings, men were nearly four times as likely to die by suicide than women throughout the state. 

The center’s director Charles Katz says mental health in relationships needs more attention.

“Within this study, we saw that one of the major factors related to suicide was related to inter-partner violence that the individual was experiencing or a part of,” Katz said. 

The study was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a part of a national survey to determine federal funding for suicide prevention. The ASU center will examine trends for another five years.
