Families who want school vouchers for their students will have an extra 15 days to apply for them.

This comes after Secretary of State Katie Hobbs confirmed the effort to block voucher expansion had failed.

The Arizona Department of Education experienced a high volume of parents applying for vouchers on Friday. A department spokesperson said the increased traffic overwhelmed their website. So the state is extending the deadline to apply for first quarter funding until Oct. 15.

Volunteers with Save Our Schools Arizona were trying to give voters the last word on a law that makes every student eligible for vouchers. But they didn’t collect enough signatures to refer it to the ballot.

The department was accepting applications before Friday’s announcement, on a conditional basis.
