Over the weekend, a recently wed groom was murdered in front of a church in Sonora.

The attack took place in Caborca, a city in northwestern Sonora that has experienced alarming levels of violence in recent years. The victim, identified only as Marco Antonio by Sonoran authorities, was from the state of Durango and living in Jalisco, and had traveled to Caborca for the wedding. A woman was also wounded in the incident.

The Sonora Attorney General’s Office is investigating what it describes as a targeted attack, but raised the possibility that the intended target was a different person who also had a wedding planned that day in another city.
