Ron Barber to hold first event at a Tucson Safeway

June 21, 2012

Newly elected Representative Ron Barber will hold his first "Congress on the Corner" event this weekend in Tucson. Barber was sworn in this week, replacing former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically wounded at a similar event lat year.  KJZZ’s Al Macias Reports.

This will be Barber’s first event back home since he was sworn in on Tuesday as the new representative from southern Arizona. Barber was an aide to Congresswoman Giffords when they and seventeen other people were shot at a “Congress on the Corner” event in January of 2011. Six people were killed.

Giffords survived but resigned earlier this year to focus on her recovery. Barber won a special election last week to finish out Giffords current Congressional District 8 term.

Saturday’s event will be at a Safeway store in Tucson a few miles from another Safeway store where last year’s shootings took place.

In a statement from Barber’s office, he says he plans to hold other events to stay in touch with his constituents. He says he will for a full two year term in the newly re-drawn District Two in the fall.
