A federal judge is blocking Arizona from enforcing a 31-year-old law that prohibits defense attorneys from talking directly to crime victims or their families.

Judge Steve Logan said the law passed in 1990 that only allows for defense attorneys to talk to victims through the prosecutor’s office restricts the defense’s ability to represent their clients.

Logan said that crime victims and their families will still be able to refuse interviews with the defense, and that there’s ample evidence victims are aware of their rights.

He added there had been no reports from the state Attorney General’s Office of defense teams overstepping that would have required the law to be passed.

The lawsuit was brought by the ACLU on behalf of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice.
