The partisan makeup of Arizona's U.S. House delegation and control of Congress itself are up for grabs Tuesday, with Republicans hoping to shift the state's 5-4 Democratic tilt by picking up two and possibly three seats.

Redistricting after the 2020 U.S. Census gave the GOP candidates a leg up in those three districts. Meanwhile, a district that had strongly favored Republicans for the past decade got only slightly less GOP-friendly. The other five districts are shoo-ins for the incumbents in districts that heavily favor the sitting members of Congress.

1st District

Republican David Schweikert won reelection to U.S. House in Arizona's 1st Congressional District, the AP said Monday night. Schweikert defeated Democrat Jevin Hodge to gain a seventh term representing the northeast Phoenix suburbs' 1st District.

Schweikert survived a second straight election where he was dogged by ethics issues, following violations of campaign finance rules and laws barring the use of congressional staff for campaign work. Hodge was seen as a rising star in Democratic politics but was hampered by the slight Republican registration advantage in the wealthy 1st Congressional District that covers parts of northeast Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and Fountain Hills.

2nd District

According to the AP, Republican challenger Eli Crane has defeated the incumbent Tom O’Halleran in the 2nd Congressional District, flipping one of Arizona’s U.S. House seats.

The Democrat O’Halleran had represented the region since first winning election in 2016. But the seat was viewed as vulnerable when the sprawling district was redrawn in December, putting more Republican voters within its boundaries.

In a statement released Thursday, the political newcomer Crane wrote: “I will never forget whom I serve or why the people sent me to represent them. I will always be your voice.”

O’Halleran’s opponent, Eli Crane was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and has run on a platform that includes no mask mandates, tougher border security, tougher voter ID laws and what he calls "defeating cancel culture."

3rd District

Voters have reelected Democrat Ruben Gallego to the U.S. House in Arizona’s 3rd Congressional District. Republican challenger Jeff Zink ran a campaign based on conservative values, but struggled to gain traction in the heavily Democratic district. Gallego has served in Congress since 2015, serving in the 7th Congressional District, and ran in the newly-drawn 3rd Congressional District.

4th District

Democrat Greg Stanton won reelection to U.S. House in Arizona's 4th Congressional District, the AP said Friday.

Stanton was first elected to the U.S. House in 2018, representing what was then known as District 9. He was re-elected in 2020, receiving more than 60% of the vote each time. But redistricting placed Stanton in a more competitive District 4, which covers Tempe, Mesa, and portions of Chandler and Ahwatukee. A tight race has been forecast since congressional maps were redrawn in December.

Throughout his campaign, political newcomer Cooper has focused on what many Republican candidates have been highlighting: inflation, the economy and border security.

While Stanton also campaigned on the economy, he has emphasized abortion rights and said he would vote to codify Roe v. Wade into law. Cooper has argued that abortion access should be left for states to decide.

5th District

Republican Rep. Andy Biggs beat Democrat Javier Ramos in the 5th Congressional District, AP said Wednesday.

6th District

Democrats lost a second U.S. House seat in Arizona on Monday after a former aide to Republican Gov. Doug Ducey won a seat in the state's southeast that is being vacated by retiring Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick.

Republican Juan Ciscomani beat Democrat Kirsten Engel in the open 6th Congressional District seat now held by Kirkpatrick. Ciscomani is a former senior adviser to Ducey who has strong ties to the business community. He touted his background as an immigrant who became a U.S. citizen after his family came to Arizona from Mexico when he was a boy.

Ciscomani's win cements a 6-3 Republican majority in Arizona's congressional delegation and helps the GOP's efforts to take control of the House.

7th District

The Associated Press says southern Arizona Democrat Raúl Grijalva has won Arizona’s 7th Congressional District race. Grijalva will serve an 11th term in the U.S. House of Representatives after defeating Republican challenger Luis Pozzolo. The 7th Congressional District runs along the southern border from Yuma to east of Douglas and north into the southwest Valley.

8th District

Republican Rep. Debbie Lesko faced only write-in candidates and won.

9th District

Republican Rep. Paul Gosar faced only write-in candidates and won.
