Beginning May 3, 2023, Arizona airline travelers will need a federally compliant form of identification.

Bill Lamoreaux is the spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Transportation, and he says this is something that needs to be done quickly for all future travel.

“They will need either the travel ID, or some other federally compliant ID such as a passport or the passport card in order to get past TSA, even for domestic flights,” says Lamoreaux.

Travel IDs will be required on all domestic flights starting in May 2023 to comply with the Real ID Act of 2005.

Lamoreaux recommends going to the Motor Vehicle Division during November and December because these months are historically the least busy all year.

The department allows walk-ins but appointments also can be made. Travelers need either a birth certificate or passport, their Social Security number, and two documents proving they are Arizona residents.

The IDs cost $25 and take up to 14 days to receive in the mail.
