An Arizona-based law firm has sued the Food and Drug Administration, claiming it has chosen politics over science when approving abortion-inducing drugs.

Attorneys for the Alliance Defending Freedom contend medication-induced abortions are unsafe and that the FDA ignored evidence before approving its use.

The Alliance says protecting religious freedom and “God’s design for marriage and family” are among its goals.

Most non-surgical abortions use two drugs: mifepristone, which is designed to terminate a pregnancy, and misoprostol, which induces contractions to expel the fetus from the womb.

Planned Parenthood Arizona President Brittany Fonteno says if the lawsuit is successful, it will remove an important option for women.

Virtually all non-surgical abortions in Arizona were performed using that two drug regimen in 2020.
