Neighboring Sonora has been hit by a terrible dengue season, but one that now seems to be heading in the right direction.

Sonora is by far the state most impacted by the potentially deadly mosquito-borne virus in Mexico this year, federal data show. But those numbers also now show a notable decline in new cases.

The most recent federal report shows that 68 cases were confirmed in late November, a number not seen since September. New cases peaked in October, when well over 200 were confirmed in back-to-back weekly reports.

The colonial city of Alamos, home to a sizable expatriate population, has been one of the most impacted communities, but cases there have dropped off dramatically in recent weeks.
