Opposition from neighbors derailed a planned cars-free event in downtown Hermosillo last weekend.

The plan for Bulevar Hidalgo was one that a number of cities in the United States have seen versions of: close off a portion of the street to vehicles and allow restaurants and others to set up tables in one lane of traffic for a family — and pedestrian-friendly Sunday.

But some neighbors — who have long complained of noise, trash and parking issues that rapid development in the area has brought — thought that the event would just bring more of the same. With the help of a city mediator, promoters and opponents met this week to hash out differences.

Architect Marcela Orozco says it’s impossible to know when or if the event will be rescheduled, but that anytime such proposals are discussed “is a step forward.”

She added that she and other backers aren’t in a rush, and that it’s best to wait for all parties to feel comfortable with it moving forward.
