Chandler City Council has passed a non-discrimination ordinance, which prohibits businesses from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, or age, among other criteria.

A city representative said that residents “spoke out, saying they did not have any protections” against discrimination, specifically for sexual orientation and gender identity.

The ordinance prohibits those and other forms of discrimination in employment, housing, and places of public accommodation, like a movie theater or day care center.

Any business that violates the ordinance within city limits would become “ineligible for a contract or grant from the City of Chandler.” 

With this move, Chandler joins more than five other Arizona cities that have non-discrimination ordinances.
