Legislative Panel Advances Changes To Specialty License Plates

Specialty license plates in Arizona would have to have a more standard design, under a measure approved by a state Senate committee Tuesday. There are currently more than 50 specialty license plates in the state, honoring groups including Arizona’s universities, sports teams, the military and medical research, among other causes. But, law enforcement officials have complained that makes it difficult for officers and other drivers to tell whether some plates are from Arizona or another state.

The measure approved by the Senate Transportation Committee on Tuesday would require future specialty plates to have a standard design, with a three-inch square set aside for a logo or message. Arizona Department of Transportation would be in charge of coming up with the design.

Tuesday’s vote sends the bill to the full Senate for debate.
