Glendale and Phoenix mark areas as Clean Zones for Super Bowl ads

With the Super Bowl coming up in February, Phoenix and Glendale have designated areas that will have stricter rules on advertising.

The areas are called Clean Zones.

Businesses in downtown Phoenix require approval from the city and Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee to put up temporary signage.

The rules apply from Jan. 15 to Feb. 20.

Glendale applied the same for all locations in a one-mile radius of State Farm Stadium. Its restriction window is shorter, lasting Feb. 4-13.

The cities say the reason for the move is to protect businesses from ambush marketing tactics, and to protect buyers from counterfeit products.

The move drew criticism from the Goldwater Institute, saying it impacts the speech of the businesses affected.
