Influenza and RSV cases have been dropping in Arizona after massive surges in the fall. COVID-19 cases have also been trending down in Arizona, but the state health department reported a slight uptick this week.

The Arizona Department of Health Services reported 6,187 COVID-19 in its weekly update Wednesday after reporting 4,973 cases last week. 

"Checking in with our emergency room yesterday, COVID and flu were still going strong with flu maybe taking a little bit of a lead," said Dr. Ross Goldberg, district medical group vice chair of surgery with Valleywise Health. "The question is, what's going to happen now that we're coming out of the holidays?" 

Goldberg said he’s cautiously optimistic respiratory viruses in the state are slowing down, but he thinks Christmas and New Year’s celebrations may have given flu, RSV and COVID-19 more chances to spread.

“There’s always a time delay when you have things like the holidays, so I think while things look OK at the moment, it’s what’s going to happen over the next couple of weeks which I think will be more telling," Goldberg said. 

Three weeks ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranked 14 of 15 Arizona counties in its “high” category for COVID-19 community levels. Now, just one county, Mohave, is ranked high.

Medical experts continue to urge Arizonans to get up-to-date with vaccines for COVID-19 and flu. Only about 14% of Arizonans have had the latest COVID-19 booster, according to the CDC.
