On Friday, Gov. Katie Hobbs announced her executive budget and revealed her desire to eliminate Arizona's 2022 expansion of the universal school voucher program.

Save Our Schools Arizona praised Hobbs, saying her agenda will benefit public education.

Executive Director Beth Lewis laid out some problems with the current vouchers, including state money benefiting private religious schools.

"Some of those schools that are more evangelical are discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and identity, and, you know, it’s right there on their website," she said.

Hobbs’ plan would require support from the Republican-controlled state Legislature, which is unlikely.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This story and headline have been modified to correct that Gov. Hobbs has stated she wants to eliminate an expansion of the program Republican lawmakers passed in 2022, not eliminate the program itself.
