With the Super Bowl coming to Arizona in three weeks, government agencies are busy in their efforts to protect public health and safety. That includes preparing for some worst-case scenarios.

The National Nuclear Security Administration is conducting assessments in Glendale this week to measure background radiation. Dan Haber is with the agency’s Remote Sensing Laboratory.

“We’re measuring and mapping that natural background radiation environment so that in the event that something happens, namely the release of radioactivity to the environment, we have a well characterized baseline that we could refer back to,” he said.

Residents may have noticed low-flying aircraft, which are used to help conduct the measurements. According to Haber, the assessment is routine for other major events as well.
