What’s being left behind as Ducey’s shipping container border wall comes down

In his last days in office, former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey agreed to remove a stockpile of shipping containers he had used to build sections of wall on various parts of Arizona’s southern border. He was facing the threat of litigation from the Justice Department, which said the land wasn’t under his authority.
Now, the shipping containers are being removed — a project that’s costing the state millions. An estimate by the Arizona Republic showed the former governor’s five-month effort to fill gaps in the border wall in this makeshift way will cost Arizona taxpayers more than $200 million in the end.
But there are also environmental costs that can’t be tallied so easily.
Longtime border reporter and co-founder of the substack the Border Chronicle, Melissa del Bosque, was there when parts of this wall were being built in the Coronado National Forest.
The Show spoke with her about the environmental impacts of what’s being left behind — and where the doomed project stands now.
