A bill that would let Maricopa County voters decide whether to extend a transportation tax for another 20 years has been introduced in the Senate. If approved, the election would take place in November 2024. Mesa Republican Dave Farnsworth sponsored the bill.

"The bill was written in what I felt was the best for taxpayers. We know we have a lot of needs and a lot of miles of freeway to build. I feel very passionate about it because freeways bless the lives of generations,” Farnsworth said.

Tax revenue would go toward improving roadways, including bus lines and intersections. For now, the bill says no funding will go toward services like the light rail or street car. Amendments will be made as senators discuss the bill more within the next few weeks.

Then-Gov. Ducey vetoed a bill in 2022 that would have extended the tax, saying it should be up to voters.
