Mexico’s new policy on GMO corn is drawing further criticism from U.S. officials.

Earlier this month, Mexico published new rules that prohibited GMO corn for human consumption, but softened the position of a previous policy regarding the use of such corn for animal food and industrial food production.

In response, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said he was disappointed in the rules.

And then last week he said it’s “not a situation that lends itself to a compromise,” according to a report in Reuters.

Talks between the countries are set to begin soon, but if they don't lead to a resolution, a formal dispute settlement process under the USMCA trade deal could be next.
