The state Senate passed a bill that would require public schools to create alternate restrooms, locker rooms and showers upon request for transgender students.

While Republican Sen. and bill author John Kavanagh called the move a reasonable accommodation, Democratic Sen. Christine Marsh says it doesn’t solve any issues.

“It’s pretty stigmatizing and discriminatory to expel transgender students from common spaces. And let me remind you that this is already a group that tends to be isolated," Marsh said.

The bill could also allow students to bring legal action if schools let transgender students in a facility designated for the sex opposite the one assigned at birth.

The bill now goes to the House.
