There are a couple of GOP-sponsored bills making their way through the Arizona Legislature that, on their face, aim to protect mothers and children. But Democrats say they are surreptitious ways to add fetal personhood into Arizona law.

The idea of fetal personhood is something of the next frontier in the post-Roe v. Wade abortion landscape. It means giving rights to unborn fetuses in new ways, like providing a child tax credit to a parent the year before a child is born or allowing pregnant women to drive in the HOV lane.

Abortion rights advocates say they’re a threat to the rights of all pregnant people.
