Four finalists for Tempe police chief answered a series of questions during a virtual forum this week. Kenneth McCoy, Josie Montenegro, Tom Van Dorn and Tom Worthy are all seeking to fill the role.

The finalists weighed in on several key issues, including homelessness and how to tackle  certain forms of discrimination in the department. Each finalist also spoke on their ability to establish community trust, especially with residents of color.

Lawrence LaVictoire the city’s human resources manager, moderated the discussion. Here, he is reading part of an inquiry from a Tempe resident.

“There have been a rash of police incidents over the past several years that has eroded trust between the community and the police. In fact, there have been a few high-profile incidents of this nature that have occurred within the city of Tempe as well," he said.

Tempe police have attracted criticism in recent years over use of force.

Although it’s not clear when, the city manager will ultimately choose the next chief.
