Flagstaff residents are being warned about a new flooding risk after an important creek culvert was blocked.

City officials warned Thursday that a culvert on Highway 180 on Flagstaff’s northwest side is damaged and partially obstructed. The concern is that runoff could lead to flooding in neighborhoods downstream of Schultz Creek. Particularly as temperatures reach the 60s this week and melts more snow off the San Francisco Peaks.

The damaged culvert is owned by the Arizona Department of Transportation, which is currently working on a remedial plan.

Schultz Creek was one of the runoff areas that led to severe flooding last summer after the massive Pipeline Fire.

Detention basins funded partially through more than $2 million dollars in federal grants last year are still functioning as designed.
