Sonora’s top prosecutor announced this week that Interpol has agreed to issue a “red notice” for the search and arrest of a suspect in a local hit-and-run case.

On the evening March 5, a suspect identified as Nathan Karim "N." reportedly hit 31-year-old Brenda Lopez, her 5-year-old daughter, Ximena, and 2-year-old nephew, Favre, with his car in Hermosillo then sped away.

The three victims were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. Nathan Karim — allegedly with the help of his parents — fled Sonora into the United States.

On Tuesday, six weeks after the crash, Sonora officials announced that Interpol issued a red notice seeking international assistance to locate and arrest the suspect.

In late March, Nathan Karim’s parents were arrested for trying to cover up their son’s crime. But were later released after reaching a restitution agreement with authorities and the victims’ families. The terms include financial reparations, turning over their passports and remaining under surveillance.

Nathan Karim’s mother was a public defender. The status of her job with the state is currently unclear.
